Novices causing upsets

Out of the 4 categories:  Time Trial, Grand Prix, Match Race, Battle Mode, would I be right in saying that, a novice would be more likely to beat an experienced player in the battle mode?

Me and my cousin play Mario kart, a couple times a month.  I am better than him but, I am nothing compared to you guys 

Anyway, we have played battle mode games and I have won the game in like 10 seconds.  I get 3 Red shells in a row and that's the match over.  Obviously you might end up with 3 bananas in a row  but 3 Red shells very quickly does happen.

Have novice players ever beating the best players before at the World Championships at battle mode? Or, has it happened in the other 3 categories?

I don't want you to panic or flee but against top BM players even 5 reds in a row won't help you

It's might be possible for a novice player to beat Harold or Geo, though only if they are looking to throw matches to skew the rankings for the knockout stages.
